Non-Native Crib Sheet

When I was just starting out on this non-native bilingual journey, I was eager not only for guidance on how to express myself naturally and accurately, but for reassurance that, in fact, I was actually speaking like a native (as awkward as I may have felt!). Even now, almost 4 years into our journey, I appreciate the guidance--and mostly the validation--that Kaya is hearing nearly the same German that she might if I had been raised in this language. Thus, after reading about this Non-Native Crib Sheet on Nichola's Non-Native Bilingual Adventure blog, I decided replicate the idea for those of us who might benefit from the German/English guidance.

In addition to benefiting from Nichola's original idea, I'd like to thank Anke Koenigsbauer, a friendly native speaker from southern Germany who is once again feeling empowered to raise her son bilingually in her non-native English. She has taken much time to enhance this list with both corrections and additions, which I truly appreciate. Kate, of German in the Afternoon, also added her input, and  similarly has a Word of the Day on the sidebar of her blog. On a similar note, there is an awesome online publication by the name of Parenting Auf Deutsch, which is available on  Alphabet Garten by subscribing to their newsletter. Maybe one day we'll pool our resources and publish a book!!?

At this point, we've brainstormed around the following topics:

Getting Dressed
Playing
Moving Around
Going out
Injuries
Behavior
Bathtime
Hugs and Kisses
Bedtime

I'd also like to consider adding:
Waking UP
Riding in the Car
On the playground

If you find this list helpful, please email me at klasnover@gmail.com. I'd love to hear anything that you have to add, or corrections that you think could be made, esp. by those native German speakers out there!
